How this route actually runs

Sequence and structure, in the order they happen. We do not publish transit times or distances for any lane — they are not client-approved, and a number nobody can stand behind is worse than no number at all.

STEP 02

Road to the port

The vehicle travels by road to whichever terminal fits where it was standing: Nynäshamn, south of Stockholm, for eastern and central Sweden; Karlshamn, on the south coast, for the south and west.
STEP 03

The crossing

From Nynäshamn the crossing is Stena Line to Ventspils. From Karlshamn it is DFDS to Klaipėda. Both are ro-ro freight sailings, and the vehicle stays on the transporter.
STEP 04

Delivery

From Ventspils it is a single road leg to Rīga and the rest of Latvia. From Klaipėda the road runs north through Lithuania. Delivery is to the address you give us.

The route · Sweden to Latvia

There is no ferry from Stockholm to Rīga. There has not been one since 2020.

Buyers ask for one constantly, and more than one site still implies it exists. It does not: the Rīga–Stockholm link was discontinued in 2020 and has never been restored. Talks about reopening it resumed in July 2026, and nothing sails. A car moving from Sweden to Latvia therefore travels by road at both ends with one sea crossing in the middle — and which crossing depends on where in Sweden the car is standing, not on where it is going.

Eastern Sweden: Nynäshamn–Ventspils with Stena Line. Stena Line states the crossing at approximately 8 h 30 min on the Stena Scandica and Stena Baltica, with up to two departures a day. It is the shortest sea leg into Latvia and it lands in Latvia rather than in a neighbouring country.
Southern and western Sweden: Karlshamn–Klaipėda with DFDS. DFDS, sailing with TT-Line, states the crossing at 13 hours across nine sailings a week. Accompanied freight closes an hour and a half before departure, two hours for hazardous goods. From the south coast this is the shorter path even though it lands in Lithuania.
What it is not: A direct sailing, Stockholm to Rīga. If a quote you are comparing describes one, ask which vessel.

What is different about Sweden to Latvia

Every lane on this corridor has its own rules. These are the ones that change what happens to your shipment.

The crossing is the driver's rest

Article 9(1) of Regulation 561/2006 lets a driver who accompanies the vehicle on a ferry take a regular daily rest period on board: the period may be interrupted not more than twice by other activities, not exceeding one hour in total, and the driver must have access to a sleeper cabin, bunk or couchette. On an overnight Baltic crossing that makes the sea leg legal rest rather than dead time — which is exactly why the sea route beats the land route on this corridor.

Latvia gives you five days

Registration of a vehicle brought into Latvia has to be done within five days of import, and a vehicle that will not be used in traffic still has to be presented to CSDD for data verification inside the same five days. Latvian blogs quoting thirty days are describing a different rule altogether — the ban on reselling after registration, thirty days private and fifteen for a company, while VID reviews.

Latvia accepts no foreign roadworthiness test

A valid roadworthiness test from another country does not carry over into Latvia. The first Latvian test is due within five days of registration and annually after that. Lithuania is the exact opposite: since 2018 it recognises a valid EEA inspection carried out to Directive 2014/45/EU. If the car is going on to Lithuania rather than staying in Latvia, that difference is worth knowing before you book.

No certificate of conformity for a Swedish car

CSDD does not require a COC for a vehicle previously registered in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark or Germany. What it does want is the data-verification certificate, the foreign registration document, the foreign title and your ID.

VAT turns on age and mileage, not on the seller

A used car bought from a seller in another EU state carries no Latvian VAT for a private buyer. But a vehicle counts as a “new means of transport” if it is under six months old or has under 6,000 km on the odometer — that is the statutory test, not ours, and either limb alone is enough — and then 21% applies regardless of who sold it. That has to be notified to VID by the 20th of the following month and paid within three working days.

Winter tyres, and who they actually bind

Latvia's winter tyre requirement runs 1 December to 1 March and stops at 3.5 tonnes — it binds the car once you drive it, not the transporter carrying it. If the car continues into Lithuania, note that Lithuania prohibits summer tyres from 10 November to 31 March with no weight limit at all. There is no single Baltic winter rule, and anyone who writes one sentence covering all three countries is wrong somewhere.

Sweden to Latvia — the things people ask first

Q1Is there a ferry from Stockholm to Rīga?

No. The route was discontinued in 2020 and has not been restored; talks about reopening it resumed in July 2026, but nothing sails today. What actually happens on this lane is a road leg in Sweden, one crossing — Nynäshamn to Ventspils with Stena Line, or Karlshamn to Klaipėda with DFDS — and a road leg at the other end.

Q2Can I just drive the car home myself?

We cannot tell you that a Swedish export plate will be accepted in Latvia. No Latvian rule we could find says either way, and CSDD has not published a position on it. What is settled is that Latvia requires registration within five days of import and prohibits use in traffic without registration and OCTA, with penalties attached. If you are relying on a foreign plate for that journey, get the answer from CSDD in writing first.

Q3Do you move vehicles that do not run?

Yes. It needs to roll, steer and brake, and we need the keys so the steering lock can be released — tell us when you request a price and we arrange a truck with a winch. Make sure the battery is connected, the handbrake is free and the tyres hold air; those are the things that stop a loading, and prep failures are a published insurance exclusion rather than merely a surcharge.

Q5Will the car travel open or enclosed?

Both exist, and it is a question to settle before collection rather than after. If the vehicle travels on an open unsheeted transporter, that has to be written on the CMR consignment note: Article 17(4)(a) relieves the carrier of liability for the risks inherent in open transport only “when their use has been expressly agreed and specified in the consignment note”. Ask for it in writing either way.
