01 — The route
Sequence and structure, in the order they happen. We do not publish transit times or distances for any lane — they are not client-approved, and a number nobody can stand behind is worse than no number at all.

Across the Gulf of Finland to Tallinn or Muuga. Several operators run the corridor through the day, so a collection in Finland does not have to wait on a single sailing.

From Tallinn or Muuga the vehicle continues south by road through Estonia to Rīga and the rest of Latvia.
The route · Finland to Latvia
Finland shares a long land border with Russia and none at all with the Baltics. Since the eastern crossing points were closed, the Finnish Border Guard has been explicit that the decision “also applies to commercial traffic crossing the land border.” What is left is geography: the only land route from Finland to Latvia runs north to Tornio, around the head of the Gulf of Bothnia, down the length of Sweden — and it still ends at a sea crossing. Nobody moves cars that way. The short crossing at the bottom of Finland is not an add-on to this lane. It is the lane.
03 — On this lane
Every lane on this corridor has its own rules. These are the ones that change what happens to your shipment.
Article 9(1) of Regulation 561/2006 lets a driver take a regular daily rest period on board a ferry with a sleeper cabin. The Gulf of Finland crossing is nowhere near long enough for that: it counts against the driver's working day rather than replacing part of it. It is the opposite of the Swedish lanes, where an overnight sailing is rest — and it is why the departure a load catches genuinely matters here.
Finland, Estonia and Latvia are all EU Member States inside the customs union. No declaration, no transit document, no border formality — the vehicle moves in free circulation the whole way.
Registration of a vehicle brought into Latvia has to be done within five days of import, and a vehicle that will not be used in traffic still has to be presented to CSDD for data verification inside the same five days. Latvian blogs quoting thirty days are describing a different rule altogether — the ban on reselling after registration, thirty days private and fifteen for a company, while VID reviews.
A valid roadworthiness test from another country does not carry over into Latvia. The first Latvian test is due within five days of registration and annually after that. Lithuania is the exact opposite: since 2018 it recognises a valid EEA inspection carried out to Directive 2014/45/EU. If the car is going on to Lithuania rather than staying in Latvia, that difference is worth knowing before you book.
CSDD does not require a COC for a vehicle previously registered in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark or Germany. The data-verification certificate, the foreign registration document, the foreign title and your ID are what it does want.
A used car bought from a seller in another EU state carries no Latvian VAT for a private buyer. But a vehicle counts as a “new means of transport” if it is under six months old or has under 6,000 km on the odometer — that is the statutory test, not ours, and either limb alone is enough — and then 21% applies regardless of who sold it. That has to be notified to VID by the 20th of the following month and paid within three working days.

Not by any route anyone uses. The land border with Russia is closed to commercial traffic, and the alternative runs the length of Finland, around the head of the Gulf of Bothnia and down through Sweden — where it still meets a sea crossing. On top of that, Latvia requires registration within five days of import and prohibits use in traffic without registration and OCTA.
Whichever sailing fits the collection, and we will tell you which one. Tallink runs Helsinki West Harbour to Tallinn Old City on MyStar and Megastar. Eckerö Line runs the M/S Finbo Cargo from Vuosaari to Muuga. Viking Line Cargo runs Viking XPRS. DFDS runs the Muuga–Vuosaari corridor too.
Yes. It needs to roll, steer and brake, and we need the keys so the steering lock can be released — tell us when you request a price and we arrange a truck with a winch. Make sure the battery is connected, the handbrake is free and the tyres hold air; those are the things that stop a loading.
Yes — collection from a private address, a dealer or an auction yard is standard.
Both exist, and it is a question to settle before collection rather than after. If the vehicle travels on an open unsheeted transporter, that has to be written on the CMR consignment note: Article 17(4)(a) relieves the carrier of liability for the risks inherent in open transport only “when their use has been expressly agreed and specified in the consignment note”. Ask for it in writing either way.
