01 — The route

How this route actually runs

Sequence and structure, in the order they happen. We do not publish transit times or distances for any lane — they are not client-approved, and a number nobody can stand behind is worse than no number at all.

  1. STEP 01

    Collection

We collect from the Swedish address you give us. Auction yards and dealer forecourts are routine collections, not exceptions.

  2. STEP 02

    Road to the port

Stockholm for Tallink's Tallinn sailings, Kapellskär to the north for DFDS to Paldiski, or Karlshamn on the south coast for vehicles standing in southern Sweden.

  3. STEP 03

    The crossing

Stockholm–Tallinn, Kapellskär–Paldiski, or Karlshamn–Klaipėda with a road leg north. The choice is made on where the car is, not on where it is going.

  4. STEP 04

    Delivery

From Tallinn or Paldiski it is a short road leg to the delivery address; from Klaipėda the road runs north through Latvia.

The route · Sweden to Estonia

Sweden to Estonia is one of the few lanes here with a real direct sailing.

Unlike Stockholm to Rīga, which has had no ferry at all since 2020, the Stockholm to Tallinn link is real. On this lane the vehicle can go on the boat at one end and come off it at the other. That is unusual on this corridor, and it is worth knowing when you are comparing a Swedish purchase against an Estonian one.

Stockholm–Tallinn
Tallink runs the Baltic Queen on the route, states the crossing at 16 hours, and sails every other evening. The cadence is the thing to plan around here: the constraint is which evening, not how fast.
Kapellskär–Paldiski
DFDS runs it — a shorter sea leg with longer road legs at each end. The operator does not publish a crossing time, so neither do we.
Southern Sweden
Karlshamn–Klaipėda with DFDS, then road north through Lithuania and Latvia. DFDS, sailing with TT-Line, states the crossing at 13 hours across nine sailings a week. Accompanied freight closes an hour and a half before departure, two hours for hazardous goods.

What is different about Sweden to Estonia

Every lane on this corridor has its own rules. These are the ones that change what happens to your shipment.

A long sailing is more than a daily rest

Article 9(1) of Regulation 561/2006 lets a driver who accompanies the vehicle on a ferry take a regular daily rest period on board: the period may be interrupted not more than twice by other activities, not exceeding one hour in total, and the driver must have access to a sleeper cabin, bunk or couchette. On an overnight Baltic crossing that makes the sea leg legal rest rather than dead time — which is exactly why the sea route beats the land route on this corridor. For a regular weekly rest the journey has to be scheduled at eight hours or more with cabin access. A crossing sitting barely above that threshold is not something to build a plan on; one scheduled well clear of it is. Tallink's Stockholm–Tallinn crossing is scheduled well clear of it.

No customs event on this lane

Both ends of this lane are EU Member States inside the EU customs union. There is no customs declaration, no transit document and no border formality here — the load moves in free circulation from the moment it is picked up. Norway is the one exception on our map, and it has a page of its own.

This is not cabotage

Article 2(2)(a) of Regulation 1072/2009 defines international carriage as a laden journey “the point of departure and the point of arrival of which are in two different Member States”. Loading at one end of this lane and unloading at the other is international carriage. The cabotage counter never starts.

We will not guess at Estonian registration rules

Estonia's tax and registration authorities publish material we have not been able to read from the primary source, so we do not repeat what other sites assert about Estonian vehicle tax or registration deadlines. Ask us and you will get what we actually know, what we do not, and a pointer to Transpordiamet for the rest. It is a shorter answer than the confident one, and it is the true one.

What the consignment note has to say about open transport

Both exist, and it is a question to settle before collection rather than after. If the vehicle travels on an open unsheeted transporter, that has to be written on the CMR consignment note: Article 17(4)(a) relieves the carrier of liability for the risks inherent in open transport only “when their use has been expressly agreed and specified in the consignment note”. Ask for it in writing either way.

The condition report is the document that matters

Under CMR Articles 8 and 9, if no reservations are made at loading the goods are presumed to have been received in good condition — so the inspection at collection is the document that matters. The European standard is the ECG Visual Inspection Guidelines v4.1: roughly three minutes per vehicle, from about a metre, at 90° for scratches and 30° for dents, keys and fobs verified, and a minimum of three photographs for every exception. Both parties sign. The guidelines are also clear that the receiving party should not move or handle the vehicle until the delivering party has been made aware of the exceptions.

06 — Questions

Sweden to Estonia — the things people ask first

Q1Is there a direct ferry from Stockholm to Tallinn?

Yes. Tallink runs the Baltic Queen on the route, states the crossing at 16 hours and sails every other evening. DFDS also runs Kapellskär to Paldiski, though it does not publish a crossing time. This is genuinely different from Stockholm to Rīga, where no ferry has run since 2020.

Q2What do I need to know about registering the car in Estonia?

Ask us, and you will get an honest answer about what we know and what we do not. Estonia's tax and registration authorities publish material we have not been able to read from the primary source, so we do not repeat what other sites assert about Estonian vehicle tax or registration deadlines. Transpordiamet is the authority to check.

Q3Do you move vehicles that do not run?

Yes. It needs to roll, steer and brake, and we need the keys so the steering lock can be released — tell us when you request a price and we arrange a truck with a winch. Make sure the battery is connected, the handbrake is free and the tyres hold air.

Q4Do you collect from an auction yard in Sweden?

Yes — collection from a private address, a dealer or an auction yard is standard.

Q5Will the car travel open or enclosed?

Both exist, and it is a question to settle before collection rather than after. If the vehicle travels on an open unsheeted transporter, that has to be written on the CMR consignment note: Article 17(4)(a) relieves the carrier of liability for the risks inherent in open transport only “when their use has been expressly agreed and specified in the consignment note”. Ask for it in writing either way.

Q6Can I leave belongings in the car?

No — please empty the vehicle before collection. Personal items are not covered during transport.
