01 — The route
Sequence and structure, in the order they happen. We do not publish transit times or distances for any lane — they are not client-approved, and a number nobody can stand behind is worse than no number at all.

Sweden and Finland can be connected by land around the head of the Gulf of Bothnia or by sea across the Åland Sea. Which one a vehicle takes turns on where it is standing and where it has to be, and it is decided per shipment rather than by a fixed schedule.
STEP 03
By land the two countries meet at Haparanda–Tornio: no sailing to catch and no check-in deadline. Both countries are inside the EU and inside Schengen, so there is no customs formality and no systematic border check either way.

The route · Sweden to Finland
Sweden and Finland meet on land at Haparanda–Tornio, at the head of the Gulf of Bothnia. Every other route we publish between the Nordics and the Baltics ends at a ferry ramp; this one does not have to. Whether a vehicle goes by sea or by road around the top of the Gulf is a routing decision made per shipment — and it is the reason this lane has no single sailing, no cut-off time and no timetable to work around.
03 — On this lane
Every lane on this corridor has its own rules. These are the ones that change what happens to your shipment.
On every ferry lane there is a check-in deadline before departure — DFDS closes accompanied freight an hour and a half before sailing on Karlshamn–Klaipėda, and two hours for hazardous goods. A land routing has no such gate. That is the practical difference between this lane and the rest of the map.
Both ends of this lane are EU Member States inside the EU customs union. There is no customs declaration, no transit document and no border formality here — the load moves in free circulation from the moment it is picked up. Norway is the one exception on our map, and it has a page of its own.
Article 2(2)(a) of Regulation 1072/2009 defines international carriage as a laden journey “the point of departure and the point of arrival of which are in two different Member States”. Loading at one end of this lane and unloading at the other is international carriage. The cabotage counter never starts.
The land routing around the Gulf of Bothnia is the most northerly thing on this map, and it runs in subarctic conditions for months of the year. We plan the routing for the season rather than pretending the season does not exist — but we will not quote you a country's winter tyre rule we have not read in the primary text. Latvia's, Lithuania's and Denmark's we have read. Sweden's and Finland's we are still verifying, and until we have, we say so.
Both exist, and it is a question to settle before collection rather than after. If the vehicle travels on an open unsheeted transporter, that has to be written on the CMR consignment note: Article 17(4)(a) relieves the carrier of liability for the risks inherent in open transport only “when their use has been expressly agreed and specified in the consignment note”. Ask for it in writing either way.
Under CMR Articles 8 and 9, if no reservations are made at loading the goods are presumed to have been received in good condition — so the inspection at collection is the document that matters. The European standard is the ECG Visual Inspection Guidelines v4.1: roughly three minutes per vehicle, from about a metre, at 90° for scratches and 30° for dents, keys and fobs verified, and a minimum of three photographs for every exception. Both parties sign. The guidelines are also clear that the receiving party should not move or handle the vehicle until the delivering party has been made aware of the exceptions.
